Shar Pei’s

The book I read to research this post was Shar Pei: How To Own Train And Care For Your Shar Pei by Crystal Anderson which is a very good book that I read at kindle unlimited. Shar Peis are also known as chinese fighting dogs and were created during the han dynasty in around 2,000 BC. They are one of the oldest breeds and in the 70’s were the world’s rarest breed. Traditionally the middle class in China had them and they do well as a house pet. They have a mostly black mouth and tongue and have wrinkly skin which if bitten by another animal allows them to wriggle and bite back. The chinese often used them for dog fighting and hunting animals like boer and wolves. Once they are angry they will never back down. Having said that they rarely bark and are fairly calm. In the early communist era dog owning was heavily taxed and considered a luxury so many dogs were abandoned. Some were smuggled out of China though. There are a few potential health problems like bloat, shar pei fever, dirt getting into and infecting their wrinkles and various parasites like mites and fleas. This book is around 30 pages so is quite short. I did enjoy reading this book and do recommend it.
